100 songs Long Islanders should know

As we prepare for the upcoming Long Island Music Hall of Fame Induction Gala on Oct. 18 at the Paramount in Huntington, we wanted to pull together a list of the songs that should be a source of civic pride.
These are the 100 songs every Long Islander should know -- songs by people from here, about here, and written and recorded here, that also have changed the world of music. And by here, we go along with the LIHoF's definition of Long Island: Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk.

21. "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," Cyndi Lauper

The new wave anthem became a female rallying cry, reaching No. 2 in 1983 and establishing the Brooklyn native as one of the era's most recognizable icons. The song and video introduced the world to Lauper's wild outfits and zany circle of friends that included professional wrestlers and her mother. She re-recorded the song for her greatest hits album in a more reggae-influenced version, calling it "Hey Now (Girls Just Want to Have Fun)," which reached No. 87 in 1995.
