100 songs Long Islanders should know

As we prepare for the upcoming Long Island Music Hall of Fame Induction Gala on Oct. 18 at the Paramount in Huntington, we wanted to pull together a list of the songs that should be a source of civic pride.
These are the 100 songs every Long Islander should know -- songs by people from here, about here, and written and recorded here, that also have changed the world of music. And by here, we go along with the LIHoF's definition of Long Island: Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk.

31. "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)," Nine Days

"This is the story of a girl," declared singer-guitarist John Hampson to open "Absolutely." What followed in the charming pop hit, which reached No. 1 in 2000 and launched the band from Deer Park, was a stream of memorable images and catchy guitar riffs that were seemingly everywhere that summer. It became a rare summer anthem of that time that was rooted in rock instead of R&B or hip-hop. It also helped draw attention to a new generation of rock acts with Long Island roots, including Wheatus, Splender and Stage.
