Backstage @ VMAs: Kara DioGuardi talks 'Good Girls,' 'Idol'
"American Idol” judge Kara DioGuardi definitely had a favorite at the MTV Video Music Awards last night, though it didn’t start out that way.
DioGuardi co-wrote best pop video nominee Cobra Starship’s “Good Girls Go Bad” with singer Gabe Saporta, who admits he initially gave DioGuardi a hard time.
“A hard time? That’s kind of an understatement,” DioGuardi said, laughing, on the red carpet. “I actually wrote it with him before ‘Idol’ because it was a Tuesday and I only had two hours and he didn’t like that I only had two hours. I was like, ‘Look, guy, I gotta go on the show. What do you want me to do tell them to cancel the show?’ I was like, ‘Look, I don’t have time for this. You have a title? You’ve got a track? Let’s go.’ Then, we fell in love with each other.”
And though the “Idol” pre-season has been filled with turmoil with the exit of Paula Abdul and the unexpected entrance of Ellen DeGeneres, DioGuardi says it’s shaping up to be pretty good.
“We have some great contestants,” she said. “Obviously we’re very excited about Ellen. I think it’s gonna be a great season.”
DioGuardi said DeGeneres’ lack of music experience shouldn’t be a problem.
“I think she’s somebody who loves music,” DioGuardi said. “She loves the show. And she’s a star. I think she’ll tell these kids what that means, how important that is, because it’s not just about singing. It’s about getting onstage and commanding the respect of the audience so that they want to come back and see them over and over and buy their records. At the end of the day, she’s a positive force and I’m sure she’ll be able to tell these kids something they can use on their journeys.”
