Reigning “American Idol” Phillip Phillips laughs when asked what he thought of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team’s use of his single “Home” during the Olympics.

“I don’t have too much time to watch too much TV,” Phillips said with a smile backstage at Nassau Coliseum on Wednesday before this year’s edition of the “American Idols Live!” tour. After all, when he’s not working on the rigorous tour, he’s rushing to work on his debut album, which he hopes to release this year.

“I know it helped the song so much and I’m just so thankful that they wanted to use the song,” the Leesburg, Ga., native said about NBC‘s use of the song, which propelled it to No. 1 on iTunes and into the Top 10 on the Billboard charts. “It helped them get through to do their best. It’s just amazing.”

Though Phillips didn’t plan to do his version of Billy Joel’s “Movin’ Out” at Wednesday night’s concert, he did feel like he should pay homage to the Hicksville native while he was on his home turf. “That was one of my favorite songs that I did on the show,” he said. “He’s an amazing musician.”

Finalist Heejun Han, of Flushing, said he was thrilled to be back on his home turf — even getting to sleep in his own bed for the first time since April. “It’s special to me,” he said, adding he had 70 members of his family and friends coming to the show. “I’m kinda extra nervous for this one.”

Han said he’s currently working on a new album and a comedy series that he plans to star in about his life that he hopes to pitch to cable channels next year.
“Doing this show was an opportunity,” he said. “I plan to embrace it.”
