Beyonce, Lady GaGa lead MTV VMA nominations

Beyonce and Lady GaGa landed nine nominations apiece Tuesday to lead this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, which return to Radio City Music Hall in New York on Sept. 13 after two years away.

B’s “Single Ladies” and GaGa’s “Poker Face” will take on “Womanizer” from Britney Spears, who scored a total of seven nominations, and Eminem’s “We Made You” and Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown” for Video of the Year honors. Eminem and West will duke it out for all four of their nominations, as the rappers are also each up for Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Special Effects and Best Male Video.

Winners will be chosen by fan votes at MTV’s special VMA website (vma.mtv.com). Controversial British comic Russell Brand is set to host the awards.

“I'm excited and honored to be tied for most nominated for the VMAs,” Beyonce said in a statement. “I've been blessed this year to have 'Single Ladies' become a video people really connected with and responded to. I've spent so much time watching all the great versions people created all around the world. It's beautiful to feel you touch people and bring a song to life with a video.”

GaGa said she was also honored “after years of hustle in New York City.”

“We believe in the immensity and the promise of 'showbiz' and will continue to give it mouth-to-mouth, till its vomiting return,” she said in a statement. “All you need is a camcorder, a flashlight, and one truly GREAT idea.”
