'It's Raining Men' gets magic from 'Mike'

The official 30th anniversary of the dance floor classic “It's Raining Men” may not be until September, but Baldwin's Martha Wash got some unexpected help revving up fans of the song this weekend from “Magic Mike” and its cast of celebrity male strippers.

“It's Raining Men” (which also happens to be one of the “100 Songs Every Long Islander Should Know” and is doing well in the readers' vote) is the signature song of the fictitious troupe of male dancers, led by Channing Tatum, and its performance opens the movie. Though Wash's original version, done by The Weather Girls, appears in the movie trailer, her version doesn't appear in the movie or on the soundtrack.

Wash, who is working on a new album and promoting her new single “I've Got You,” laughs at the idea of the song still being talked about today, much less getting yet another new lease on life in a hit film. “I never in a million years thought this song would still be around 30 years later,” she says. “It's an amazing thing.”

Wash and fellow Weather Girl, the late Izora Armstead, recorded “It's Raining Men” as a favor to the song's co-writers Paul Shaffer (yes, that Paul Shaffer) and Paul Jabara, who also produced the song. “We first heard the song and said, 'You have got to be kidding me,'” Wash says. “We couldn't do the song at first because we were too busy laughing. After 90 minutes, we finished the song and we were like, 'See you later.' But Paul [Jabara] kept saying, 'This is going to be a hit. I know it.' He was right.”
