Nirvana is the only act on the Rock

Nirvana, The Replacements, Peter Gabriel, Hall & Oates, and Linda Ronstadt lead the list of first-time nominees for next year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class, while Bay Shore native LL Cool J, Kiss and Chic are among the return nominees.

Other first-timers making the list, which was announced Wednesday are Yes, The Zombies and guitarist Link Wray. Rounding out the repeat nominee list are: N.W.A., Cat Stevens, Deep Purple, The Meters and The Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

Nirvana is the only act on the list to be nominated in its first year of eligibility. The kings of the grunge era, led by the late Kurt Cobain, are eligible because their first single "Love Buzz" was released in 1988.

Ronstadt fans have long been pushing for her inclusion in the hall for her decades of genre-crossing hits. However, it may have been her recent disclosure that she has Parkinson's disease that galvanized support on the Rock Hall board.

LL Cool J hopes to follow fellow Strong Island rappers -- and recent tourmates -- Public Enemy, who were inducted into the Rock Hall this year after several nominations.

About 600 artists and music industry professionals will vote on this year's class, with the top five-to-seven vote-getters receiving the honor at a ceremony in New York in April. The honorees will be announced in December. Fans get a chance to vote for their favorites on the Rock Hall website.
