At first look, Esperanza Spalding's Best New Artist Grammy nomination seems like a shock, but not for the reason most expect.

The 26-year-old jazz phenom's "Chamber Music Society" is certainly lovely, especially "Little Fly," where she sets a William Blake poem to music. She actually has "Next Norah Jones" written all over her, a young singer/instrumentalist who embraces older styles. The question is whether she's "new," since her 2008 album "Esperanza" actually spent more than a year on the jazz charts.
