Just when we thought the battle rounds were over, “The Voice” added a whole new set of battles starting next week. Um, thanks?

Those will likely be the toughest cuts, as they go from 32 to 20 semifinalists, coached by Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

However, the final battle round had its share of rough decisions. Here’s how they stacked up:

TEAM ADAM: Cary Laine vs. Sam...

'The Voice' recap: Sisaundra Lewis rules first battle rounds night

So far this season, “The Voice” hasn’t developed a crop of front-runners the way it has in the past. That makes the battle rounds seem that much more important at creating the kind of star they desperately want.

Here’s how Night 1 shook out:

TEAM USHER: Biff Gore vs. T.J. Wilkins, “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg”

“Don’t dial back the emotion,” Usher tells them before the battle, and then...

CeeLo Green won’t be turning his chair for “The Voice” any longer.

One of the singing competition’s original four judges, Green told Ellen DeGeneres on a show airing today that he would not be returning for a seventh season of “The Voice." (Green was already sitting out the sixth season, which begins on Monday.)

“I don’t want to wear out my welcome,” Green told DeGeneres, adding that...

'The Voice' recap: Tessanne Chin will win

Well, there won’t be much suspense Tuesday night on “The Voice” Season 5 finale – at least not much generated by the contestants. (There’s always a chance of some sort of Lady Gaga-generated craziness. Or Celine Dion-esque drama. Or both!)

Tessanne Chin should win “The Voice” handily.

She simply outclassed Jacquie Lee and Will Champlin, with the power and control of her voice. The former...

“The Voice” producers sure like the drama.

Instead of sending home two contestants last week, they chose to cut only one to make this week a double elimination -- an especially brutal one, trimming the field from five to three. To raise the tension further, there was time for only one song from each contestant in the show -- cut to an hour so NBC could air two hours of “The Sing Off.”

As “The Voice” finally reached the point where the audience decides who stays and goes, the coaches began their strategizing of how to get votes for their team.

Basically, they used the two strategies all pop music artists use: Do something great or do something you think a lot of people will like. Doing something great doesn’t always guarantee success. But trying to do something because you...

The first of the knockout rounds once again shows the importance of picking the right song. Because we’re not at the point where the coaches will veto the singers’ choices, they’re on their own. And that actually turned out to be a bigger problem than you’d expect.

Here’s how the night shook out:

TEAM CHRISTINA: Amber Nicole vs. Josh Logan This battle may have been over as soon as the...

The third night of the battle rounds was all about potential. Unlike recent seasons, there’s no front-runner on “The Voice” this year, meaning someone is going to actually take the mentors’ advice and somehow learn to be a star. That should make for good TV.

There were plenty of possibilities in the third round:

TEAM CHRISTINA: Josh Logan vs. Michael Lynch, “Harder to Breathe” In the...

As “The Voice” finally moves into the battle rounds, it’s time to marvel at how good a TV show it has become.

Sure, winner Cassadee Pope’s post-“Voice” debut may give the show the moderate chart success it has been looking for this week, but really its core strength is now in the rapport between the coaches.

This season has found the original quartet of Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Cee...
