Music, concerts, musicians and more.
Harry Connick Jr., is admirably trying to educate viewers of “American Idol” on the basics of music theory.
On “Top 10 Night,” where the Top 10 finalists picked songs that reached the Top 10 from the last four years, Connick even sang sharp to show C.J. Harris what he was doing wrong. (C.J. was doing much more than that wrong, though.)
The problem, though, is that Connick sometimes overreaches...Read more »
It was a turnaround so complete that it was almost worthy of the big screen.
“American Idol” was truly terrible last week, but the Top 11 turned “Songs from the Cinema” week into something special.
Maybe it was because those who survive this week get to go on tour with the show this summer. Maybe there was some extra pressure as the show continues to struggle ratings-wise. After all,...Read more »
“Home Week” gave the “American Idol” producers the chance to shape the debate around its favorite contestants.
Dexter Roberts’ dog just had puppies! Emily Piriz is dating a Marine! MK has four moms and step-moms! Sam Woolf lives with his grandparents!
However, the debate between the judges quickly became about how they should talk about the contestants, especially when they weren’t doing...Read more »
“This Is Me” week on “American Idol” proved to be a little more difficult than expected, as some of the Top 13 struggled to express themselves clearly.
Luckily, judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban are getting better at their own self-expression. Their criticisms and suggestions – even when contradictory – make sense for the most part, and seem aimed to help the finalists...Read more »
Night Two of “American Idol” Rush Week was just as ridiculously rushed as the first. But because the guys knew what was coming, they handled it better than the gals did.
Of course, that isn’t saying too much. While there is a lot of talent in this season’s class of semifinalists, there isn’t a lot of experience. It’s where “The Voice” has shifted the expectations of singing competitions. On...Read more »
In case there was any doubt whether “American Idol” meant it when they said the focus of this season would be on having the singers do their best, um, we got the first Rush Week.
Rush Week is all about trying to make “good TV,” having the 15 semi-finalists sit in a room not knowing whether they were going to get a chance to sing until minutes before they had to go on. It succeeds in creating...Read more »
Right now, “American Idol” feels broken – not smashed beyond repair the way it seemed destined to be after the failed Mariah Carey-Nicki Minaj experiment, but still pretty messed up.
Though the lengthy audition process, which wrapped up last week when they selected the 30 – well, 31 – finalists, was much more streamlined than in the past, they ended up with new problems. There were many singers...Read more »

Hey, “American Idol” had a good finale!
Both Candice Glover and Kree Harrison performed well and the choice is in the “Idol” voters’ hands now. (And the judges didn’t get to talk much, so it was even more enjoyable than usual.)
Who will win? Well, if this was purely a singing competition, it would be Candice, who was both bolder with her vocal choices and a stronger singer overall. But...Read more »
This is what “American Idol” does best.
Most of the show’s problems faded away last night, as the focus shifted away from the comments from outsiders and the judges’ odd bickering back to the contestants for Hometown Visit Week. When (is “if” actually possible?) producers retool “Idol” in the off-season to try to reverse its ratings collapse, they should remember this show and go back to the...Read more »
