Diane Birch was calm in the face of a massive howl.

The Brooklyn singer-songwriter had the daunting task of opening for Nick Jonas and The Administration last night, the unenviable position of standing between frenzied teens and their idol. But she played it cool.

Her half-hour set from her debut CD "Bible Belt" was a sweet surprise, bouncing effortlessly between the sassy "Fools" and the impressive Brill Building-era Carole King feel of "Nothing But a Miracle." Birch mixed a bit of country twang and gospel groove into the lovely "Forgiveness" and some attitude to beef up the Norah Jones-ish "Don’t Wait Up."

It was a strong introduction for many to the promising singer and easily explains why she was on many people’s short lists for a Best New Artist Grammy nomination this year. Given the strength of many "Bible Belt" songs, she might have another shot at that nod next year.

SETLIST: Choo Choo / Fools / Nothing but a Miracle / Forgiveness / Ariel / Don’t Wait Up / Valentino
