The MTV Video Music Awards is usually a pretty tough place to break through for a first-time red carpet reporter. But Matt Martin knows a thing or two about hits.

After all, the 24-year-old New York Islanders left winger holds the NHL record for most hits in a season for the 374 he delivered in the 2011 season. Now Martin, a native of Ontario, Canada, who lives in Garden City, is turning his attention to hits of another kind.

Martin, along with Alyonka Larionov, the host of Barclays Center's BCTV, will be on the red carpet to cover the awards for the arena's in-house broadcast and website.

"Playing hockey isn't nerve-racking for me. I've been playing since I was 3 years old," he says. "This is the first time I've ever talked to people on camera, so I'm sure I'll be a little nervous. But I know it'll be fun."

Martin, a major country-music fan who calls the Kenny Chesney/Eric Church show earlier this month at MetLife Stadium his favorite concert, says he'll be rooting for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, who are tied for the lead with Justin Timberlake with six nominations for the night. "He's just come on the scene in the past year with some pretty cool songs," Martin says. " 'Same Love' is a great song and I like 'Thrift Shop' and 'Can't Hold Us.' "

Larionov, who has covered numerous red carpets, though never the VMAs, says she thinks her partner will do well.

"I think it'll be interesting to see the artists' reactions to Matt," she says. "If we get Justin Bieber or another big hockey fan, it'll be great."

Martin is brushing up on his music superstars before Sunday's show and is even learning to be diplomatic. When asked if he's excited about meeting VMA performer Miley Cyrus, he pauses before Larionov teases him with, "You don't like the short hair?"

He smiles and says, "I really like her song."

Martin says he's simply ready to have fun with the experience, though he knows he's going to face some jokes about in the Islanders' locker room. "They'll be jealous that they're not doing it," he says, laughing.

Larionov says she's ready to tweet about Martin so all his teammates will know and is looking forward to retweeting any jokes thrown his way. "That's the way the hockey world goes," she says.

To get some of the buzz started, she asks Martin to sing his favorite Eric Church song, but he politely declines. "In my car by myself, I might sing," he says, "but nowhere else."
