Brooklyn musician Jonathan Coulton was none too gleeful when the "Glee" kids recently covered his version of the Sir Mix-A-Lot 1992 classic, "Baby Got Back." Yes, "Glee" covered a cover song a couple of weeks ago on the show's "Sadie Hawkins" episode.
To make matters worse, Fox didn't credit Coulton for his arrangement of the tune, nor did it publicly acknowledge the singer. "While they appear not to be legally obligated to do any of these things, they did not apologize, offer to credit me or offer to pay me, and indicated that this was their general policy in regards to covers of covers," Coulton said on his website. Fox has had no comment on this.
Indie guy Coulton's version, a trippy acoustic take on the song, changes the line "Mix-A-Lot's in trouble" to "Johnny C's in trouble" -- and, lo and behold, the "Glee" version keeps Coulton's change.
Now, Coulton is rereleasing his version -- originally recorded in 2005 -- on iTunes and other online music services. Mix-A-Lot will receive the requisite royalties, Coulton said on his website. And Coulton will donate proceeds to the VH1 Save the Music Foundation and the It Gets Better Project.
