Mariah Carey says she wants to break the news of her engagement slowly to her 4-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan.
“I haven’t talked to them about it completely because they are so young, so they don’t really understand things yet, so you have to go slowly and explain things and always make sure they know that this is only going to be good for them,” the pop star, 46, told E! News on Monday. “Their lives are not going to change.”
Son Moroccan and daughter Monroe are Carey’s children with second husband Nick Cannon, from whom she is separated. Carey wed the singer-actor and “America’s Got Talent” host in 2008, and Cannon confirmed in August 2014 he and Carey had been “living in separate houses for a few months.” Their divorce, filed for that Dec. 12, is still pending.
Carey, who was born in Huntington and raised in Greenlawn, said she and Cannon are “trying our best” to be good co-parents. “I know I am trying my best and I think he is too,” she said. “I know they love being with him and it’s nice and I will always say positive things about him to the kids.”
She added jokingly, “Between Nick and what he does for them and then what I do for them, I just think, ‘please don’t let these kids be spoiled.’ I have to reel it in.”
Carey and her boyfriend of seven months, casino and media mogul James Packer, became engaged on Jan. 21 in Manhattan. This would be a third marriage for each. Prior to Cannon, Carey was married to music mogul Tommy Mottola from 1993 to 1997. The two had no children together.
Packer was married to swimsuit model Jodhi Meares 1999 to 2002. In September 2013, Packer and his second wife, former model Erica Baxter, announced they were separating after six years of marriage and three children. Their divorce also is not yet finalized, according to TMZ.com.
