Usually there's a theme to this column, but this week
you'll have to be satisfied with a random assortment of updates on familiar names in the local music scene. Among the news you can use:
Brand New will headline the Triple Crown Records 10 Year Anniversary show Dec. 17 at Blender Theatre at Gramercy in Manhattan. Also on the bill are As Tall As Lions, who recently played a jaw-dropping show at the Highline Ballroom. Proceeds will benefit the Fealgood Foundation, which provides assistance for 9/11 first-responders. Check out ducatking.com.
And two more 9/11 benefit concerts: One featuresKnockout Drops, led by Huntington's own Chris Campion, at Manhattan's Bowery Ballroom Dec.20. The other stars Chris' brother Bill, who'll reunite The Bogmen Dec. 30 at the Nokia TheatreTimes Square. Both shows benefit Kristy's Smile, a charity named after Bogmen keyboardist Brendan Ryan's wife, who died in the World Trade Center.
Twisted Sister will celebrate "A Twisted Christmas" on two dates, Dec. 20 and 21, at the Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza. Aspiring arena-rockers Sonic Bliss may be opening up at least one of those shows; Joey Belladonna of Anthrax has been confirmed for Dec. 21.
Speaking of the Fillmore,Push Play, an emerging emo-pop act with boy-band appeal, will play there Dec. 22 to mark the release of its CD "Deserted." Check out pushplayrox on MySpace.com to hear the glam-rock track "Plastique" and other songs.
Last but not least,Ryan Star, the shoulda-been-winner of the CBS show "Rockstar: Supernova," is wrapping up his debut disc for Atlantic Records. During a recent interview, Star revealed that he's working with superproducer Matt Serletic (of Matchbox Twenty and Santana fame) to create an elaborate, complex album that won't sound anything like the Star of yore. Stay tuned.
