Tim McGraw's 'Two Lanes of Freedom' review: Warm, vulnerable

"Two Lanes of Freedom" (Big Machine) is a great reminder that no one weaves a nostalgic, emotional country tale like Tim McGraw. Sure, he can rock with the country boys, like he does on the single "Truck Yeah," and he can charm the ladies like he does on "Southern Girl."

But McGraw is at his best when he reveals the vulnerable part of his voice and delivers a poignant ballad like "Friend of a Friend," with its plot twists and wrenching guitar solo, or the detail-filled family history of "Book of John." The warmth and sweetness in those songs truly sets McGraw apart from the rest of his country contemporaries.
