Brooke overflowing in tears

In a tearful - maybe even the most tearful - farewell in
recent "Idol" history, Brooke Elise White left "American Idol" last night.
Saying she got "the boot" seems a little harsh for Brooke, so we'll stick with "left."
She cried. Syesha Mercado - whom some (myself) expected to go, cried. Was that even a tear on the cheek of current front-runner David Cook, who put a consoling arm around Brooke? Perhaps not. But he did look sad.
And after the tears dried, we can now say: No surprise. Yes, she was lovely and sweet, and had heart and soul and beauty - and all those other things that should and undoubtedly will count for success in her life. But in "Idol," not necessarily.
Arizona-born Brooke White was a talent, but perhaps had greater talent in the "personality" department than the singing one - not that there was anything wrong with the latter. But with that big smile and puppy-dog look every time Simon Cowell told her she was lousy - quite frequently during the past few weeks - how could you not love her? A few million teens clearly did, enough to keep her in the hunt past more talented singers, like Carly Smithson, zapped last week.
What was Brooke's failing this week? Who knows: Everyone pretty much butchered Neil Diamond, at least during the first song round. She sang that Monkees' anthem for her first song (only OK - Mickey Dolenz did better of course) and her second "I Am ... I Said" was perfectly OK.
But this is "Idol." No one knows what's gonna happen at this stage - including Simon, who said Syesha was probably going to be gone last night.
So much for Si's predictions.
