Hamptons Film Fest kicks off with 'The Greatest'

A sold-out crowd filled East Hampton's Guild hall Thursday for "The Greatest," with co-star Pierce Brosnan on hand to introduce writer-director Shana Feste and her colleagues -- all of whom, Brosnan noted, were female.
"What a clever boy I am," he told the audience, "surrounding myself with all these beautiful women." The opening night film was a somber one, starring Brosnan and SusanSarandon as grieving parents, but it nevertheless started the 17th
annual Hamptons International Film Festival on a strong note. Brosnan
later showed up for the yearly bash at Gurney's Inn in Montauk, where
partygoers pulled down free vodka and danced to hip-hop into the wee
hours. The opening-night energy seemed stronger than at last year's festival.
This time there were reports that Billy Joel had been hanging with
Alec Baldwin, and that Renee Zellweger was hovering around somewhere
-- all unconfirmed, of course. Friday promises more celebrity-spotting, with Rooney Mara, Zach
Gilford and Emmy Rossum -- the stars of the teen flick "Dare," showing
today -- all scheduled to attend an afternoon Breakthrough Performers
Panel. Sharon Stone, the festival's spotlight guest, reportedly showed
up a day early today, and director Mira Nair ("The Namesake") is
scheduled to host a screening of her collaborative new film "8" (made
with Michele Gondry, Jane Campion and others) this evening. And keep your eyes peeled for Tatiana von Fürstenberg, daughter of
fashion designer Diane, and Francesca Gregorini, daughter of Barbara
Bach, who may show up for a screening of their co-directed film
"Tanner Hall," based in a girls' boarding school.
