'Project Runway' episode 2: Eh, not so good

Talk about anticlimactic.

Thursday night’s challenge was to create a chic, curve-revealing look for the pregnant Rebecca Romijn and models wore huge pregnancy pillows to represent her.  Natch she had her twin girls last January, but this underscores the problems with keeping the show off the air for more than a year.  It loses its suspense, edge and feels, well, old.

That said, the contestants are a talented bunch -- particularly the women.  “Keep an eye on the girls,” Heidi told us at some event last year.  A few of them are frock stars including tonight’s winner, Shirin Askari, who designed a classy berry dress topped by a tailored coat with a beautiful lining.  Props to Althea Harper, whose long, tailored gown was quite swanky, and to Louise Black for her sweet, detailed lingerie dress.

We’re kind of bummed out that kooky but incredibly sweet and somewhat interesting Malvin Vien was “aufed” tonight.  His wacky design revolved around fertility, the egg and the nest -- and had Tim not, um, bawked,  he would have included chicken thigh jodhpurs. The judges thought the top looked like a sling around the baby.

Best edit of the night?  Subtle insertion of “Psycho” music after Malvin describes his concept.

Mitchell Hall was, once again, in the bottom for horrendous sewing (last episode his dress left the model pretty much nude).  But the judges liked the idea of his casual shorts topped by a sweater better than poor Malvin’s bird outfit.  Seemed sort of unfair, and they are systematically aufing all the nutty characters -- too bad.

And speaking of characters, witty Michael Kors was replaced for the night by designer Monique Lhuillier, who was a thoughtful, smart judge.  But this group of gals  -- Rebecca, Nina, Heidi and Monique, came across more like an episode of “The View,” than a reality show.  What a henhouse – eesh.  We missed Michael.

Observations:  The Los Angeles beauty shots are a bit antiseptic and make us long for the noisy, gray garment district in NYC.   And Tim Gunn, love him as we do, opted for an LA style jacket in khaki.   For the first time in the history of Runway, the always distinguished-looking, impeccably dressed Tim looked, well, to steal a phrase from past winner Christian Siriano, like a hot mess.  Hot as in overheated, the jacket was rumpled, the color really bad on him.  Forgive us Tim, but that jacket needs to be aufed permanently.
