Project Runway Season 6 – it’s baaack!

We are, frankly, surprised by the outcome of the long-awaited first episode of Project Runway Season 6, which premiered Thursday night on its new home, Lifetime.

The challenge? Create a red carpet look that demonstrates true innovation and represents the designer’s point of view, with a budget of $200 for fabric.

The winner?  Christopher Straub, a visual merchandiser from Shakopee, Minn., who created a broody-cutie cocktail dress that featured sharp texture and soft ruffles, and was a particular fave of Heidi’s and guest judge Lindsay Lohan.  Straub has no design education whatsoever, and doesn’t even know words like “smocking.”  We kind of liked the dress, though preferred Ra’mon-Lawrence Coleman’s deep purple number but the judges deemed it too safe.

Ari Fish, the mandatory token nut job was “aufed” tonight -- and that was the shocker because she was so wacky that she added character to the show.  During a segment when the designers were supposed to be sketching, Ari, who doesn’t sketch, meditated and, seriously, did a headstand.  Her design was rather frightful – a silvery top made up of hexagons over shorts (Red carpet-wear? Um, no.) Tim Gunn wondered if it might look like a “geodesic diaper” and Michael Kors called it a “disco soccer ball.”   Lindsay Lohan had an almost visible bubble over head when she saw the outfit, like “Whaaaat is that?”

It was between her and Mitchell Hall, who in a last minute effort to fit the model designed a totally see-through caftan.  “Completely unwearable.  She can’t leave the house,” Kors said.

But naked trumped weird in this episode.

Some observations:  Irina Shabyeva’s got a little Eva Longoria look going on.  We suspect that Logan Neitzel, self-proclaimed “guy’s guy” is going to a heartthrob and we like Epperson, the 50-year-old New Yorker who whipped out pictures of his family right off the bat.  We wish winner Christopher would lose the jerky baseball cap turned to one side, but unfortunately, he can’t take our advice because the show’s a year old.

Also, the judges seemed a little tame – no bite or real sizzle, but perhaps they were just playing nice on their first date with the contestants.
