Trivia: the holiday shopping -Thanksgiving connection

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Although the exact date changes from year to year, we can count on Thanksgiving to fall on the last Thursday of November. But that wasn't always the case.

In 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt moved the holiday up a week. With the  U.S. economy still struggling to recover from the Great Depression, retailers actually pressured him to change the date in order to increase the number of shopping days before Christmas. Roosevelt agreed and issued a formal proclamation that officially changed Thanksgiving to the next-to-last Thursday of the month.

It didn't sit well with the public, however. There was such an uproar throughout the country that FDR changed the date back just two years later.
