Yonkers Film Festival debuting in October
Yonkers has been the setting for quite a few high-profile film and television shoots in recent months, featuring movie stars such as Will Smith and Katie Holmes. So it’s only fitting that the city host the inaugural Yonkers Film Festival (dubbed YoFi Fest) this year, with the event taking place Oct. 11-13.
“We are thrilled to host our first, of hopefully many, film festivals here in Yonkers,” said Mayor Mike Spano in a news release today. “Easily accessible to all filmmakers and film lovers, Yonkers is a natural fit to be the next hot bed of cinematic discovery.”
The Yonkers Film Festival will be curated by film and television professionals, and will screen feature films, short films, documentaries, music videos and student work. The festival also will host lectures, panel discussions and other events where attendees will have the chance to meet and interact with industry professionals.
The submission period is scheduled to begin in May, and the complete roster of films and events will be confirmed this summer.
The festival announcement comes on the heels of a flurry of activity for filming in the Westchester city. “Mania Days,” starring Katie Holmes and produced by Spike Lee, is filming at Yonkers’ Alder Manor through Friday; the indie horror film “Innocence” filmed in Yonkers last summer; and “Winter’s Tale,” starring Will Smith and Russell Crowe, filmed on a closed set at the Yonkers Stage last year. Yonkers has also hosted numerous TV shoots, including the hit HBO drama “Boardwalk Empire” and two CBS pilots, "The Ordained" and "Hostages.”
