A few surprises as SAG nominations are announced

The Screen Actors Guild this morning announced its nominations, which include most of the expected names (Daniel Day-Lewis in "Lincoln,” John Hawkes in “The Sessions") but also a few surprises.

One is Naomi Watts as a mother who survives the 2004 Asian tsunami in "The Impossible," a true-life drama that hasn’t gotten much buzz. Another is Nicole Kidman for her raunchy role in "The Paperboy," a Lee Daniels film that met with mixed reviews to say the least. The romantic comedy “Silver Linings Playbook” also fared surprisingly well, earning four nominations in all, including best ensemble. That's as many as “Lincoln.”

The one glaring omission: Joaquin Phoenix, widely praised for his performance as a dysfunctional cultist in "The Master." Philip Seymour Hoffman, who plays the title role in that film, is nominated for supporting actor.

The 19th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be broadcast rom the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center on Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. on TNT and TBS.
