Kirk Cameron defends Rep. Todd Akin 'legitimate rape' comment
In a less than shocking move, former child star Kirk Cameron has spoken out in support of Rep. Todd Akin, after the politician's highly-criticized comments about rape and abortion.
Cameron, who is known for his openness about his religious and political views, appeared on CNN and the “Today” show to share his thoughts on Akin's “legitimate rape” controversy.
“Clearly this is a man who is advocating the sanctity of life through and through,” the former “Growing Pains” star told Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb on “Today.”
Cameron went on to say that Akin misspoke and is now in a tough place.
“He apologized for it, and I like to evaluate people based on their entire life, their entire career, all they stand for,” he said. “I believe he is a good man.”
Cameron's words come just a few months after he found himself in the middle of a similar controversy when he told Piers Morgan on CNN that being gay is “detrimental," "unnatural” and “ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.”
He later defended himself to ABC News, and said he “should be able to express moral views on social issues.”
