Lindsay Lohan can't leave Betty Ford premises
While it's a far cry from the jail sentence she barely avoided, Lindsay Lohan's 90-day rehab stint will not afford her the same freedoms most patients get at the Betty Ford Center.
Unlike the other individuals she will sit with in group therapy at the Rancho Mirage, Calif. facility, Lohan is not allowed to leave the campus to go shopping or out to lunch, People magazine reports. A letter addressed to the star's attorney and filed in Los Angeles Superior Court says Lohan will be confined to the Betty Ford campus for the next three months.
"It is understood by the Betty Ford Center that your client is to remain on the premises for the duration of her 90-day stay in treatment," the letter filed in court reads.
A judge sentenced the 26-year-old to a locked rehabilitation facility in March, but non-jail rehab facilities in the United States cannot hold a person against his or her will (unless that person is suicidal -- and even then, a lockdown is limited to 72 hours, according to celebrity rehab guru Dr. Drew).
"We can't hold a patient against their will, we can't stop a patient from running away. We're not a jail," an intake counselor told People. "But we closely monitor patients via security and technicians 24 hours a day."
When Lohan got into a scuffle with a Betty Ford employee during a previous stay in 2010, the employee alleged the actress jumped a wall and left the facility, and later sneaked back in after curfew. And just last week, Lohan fled the rehab center she initially planned to attend after only a few minutes, then checked into Betty Ford hours later.
Do you think Lindsay Lohan will bolt from rehab again before her 90 days are up, or will she respect the terms of her sentence and stay put?
