As winter storm Nemo buries Long Island, take advantage of Netflix, Hulu and cable's on-demand channels to catch one (or several) of these movies, recently released on DVD. They're sure to help fight off cabin fever and keep the kids entertained for a couple hours a pop.
With the Oscars coming up on Feb. 24, being snowed-in is also the perfect opportunity to catch up on all the nominated films you haven't seen yet. Because who doesn't love a good movie marathon?
"Cloud Atlas" (R): Tom Hanks and Halle Berry star in this sci-fi drama that explores how individuals' lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future.
"Flight" (R): Denzel Washington is nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of an airline pilot who saves a plane from crashing, but may not be such a hero after an investigation reveals troubling details of the plane's malfunction.
"Here Comes the Boom" (PG): Here's one for the whole family. Kevin James fans young and old will enjoy this flick about a high schoolteacher who becomes a mixed-martial arts fighter to raise money for his school when its extracurricular activities face cuts.
"Hotel Transylvania" (PG): James teams up with Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg to voice this animated comedy about Dracula's high-end resort for monsters.
"Brave" (PG): Disney princess lovers will adore this girl-power animated flick (nominated for best animated feature film) about a bow-and-arrow wielding Princess Merida (voiced by Taylor Swift), who must save her kingdom from chaos.
"Frankenweenie" (PG): Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara lend their voices to this Tim Burton movie about a youg boy whose science experiment brings his beloved dog back from the dead. This one is also nominated for an Animated Feature Film Academy Award.
"The Avengers" (PG-13): Nominated for Best Visual Effects, Marvel's action-packed flick features all your favorite superheroes, including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and more.
"Ted" (R): Be warned, this teddy bear film is not kid-friendly. But it is hilarious. Mark Wahlberg stars as a man whose friendship with his childhood stuffed animal, Ted (voiced by "Family Guy"'s Seth MacFarlane), threatens his adult relationships.
And finally, the obvious choice: "Finding Nemo," in honor of the storm's moniker. A true classic that was recently released in 3-D.
