In a few weeks we'll finally get to see “Pacific Rim,” Guillermo del Toro's unlikely foray into the world of effects-driven, action-filled, sci-fi blockbusters. For now, the longest peek we'll get is a new trailer, below.

The plot isn't being revealed, but we know the basic premise: In the future, giant monsters from beneath the sea, called Kaiju, battle humans who control giant robots called Jaegers.

That may sound like manna from fanboy heaven, but so far the buzz on the film has been somewhat mild. One reason may be the lack of a major A-list star. Instead, “Pacific Rim” has a random-looking but solid cast that includes Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Ron Perlman (of Del Toro's “Hellboy” films).

On a skeptical note, the trailer suggests a pretty typical summer flick, with the kind of stuff you wouldn't expect from del Toro: lots of military gear and hoo-ra action, a prominently placed American flag, two handsome guys fighting about something. You'll also hear Elba delivering a stirring speech designed to rally the troops and pump up our great nation/world/species. If you didn't know del Toro was involved, you might mistake this for “Transformers” or even “Battleship.” Then again, del Toro is a smart filmmaker who rarely does things the typical way.

“Pacific Rim” is due in theaters July 12.
