Report: 'Dark Knight Rises,' slowed by shooting, Warner Bros. says

Warner Bros. exec Jeff Goldstein said there was “no question” that the Aurora shootings had slowed the box-office performance of “The Dark Knight Rises,” according to E! Online.
The article doesn't cite much direct evidence to back up Goldstein's claim, aside from the fact that the $354.6 million domestic take of “Rises” is about $39 million behind where 2008's “The Dark Knight” was at this point.
Goldstein said the new movie's box-office lag is “directly attributable” to the shootings in Aurora, Colo., which occurred during a Thursday midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” and left 12 people dead.
That's possible, although other explanations for the slightly off performance include unrealistic expectations, mixed reviews, lukewarm word-of-mouth and nightly broadcasts from the 2012 Olympics in London.
Goldstein also told E! Online that receipts from “The Dark Knight Rises” would go “way past $1 billion” and surpass those of “The Dark Knight.”
