'The Great Gatsby' trailer released

Actor Joel Edgerton comments on the highly anticipated

Actor Joel Edgerton comments on the highly anticipated Baz Lurhmann film adaptation 'The Great Gatsby,' starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, that opens in U.S. theaters on Christmas Day. AP video. (April 26)

The first trailer for "The Great Gatsby" is now online, offering more than two-and-a-half minutes of images from Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel.

It's a chance to hear Leonardo DiCaprio, as Gatsby, do a lockjaw accent, while Carey Mulligan, as Daisy Buchanan, puts on an old-money Kentucky drawl. Joel Edgerton ("Warrior") plays her husband, Tom, while Isla Fisher is his mistress, Myrtle Wilson. Tobey Maguire is Nick Carroway and newcomer Elizabeth Debicki plays his jaded girlfriend, Jordan Baker.

It's an opulent-looking production with the usual eccentric Luhrmann touches — flappers from 1922 appear to be dancing to a Jay-Z/Kanye track, and Gatsby's yellow Roadster swerves around to U2's "Love is Blindness." But the trailer also promises some fidelity to the novel, making sure to include its most famous image, the vacant-eyed billboard of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg.

"The Great Gatsby" is set for release in 3-D on Christmas Day.
