Today in history: 'Gone with the wind' premieres

"Gone with the Wind" premiered on the big screen in Atlanta on Dec. 15, 1939. It was a star-studded affair bringing Hollywood celebrities like Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh to the Deep South. But co-stars Hattie McDaniel (Mammy) and Butterfly McQueen (Prissy) were noticibly absent from the event. Though the two black actresses had major roles in the film, they weren't welcome in the white side of town, where the screening was held.
