'X-Factor' on Long Island: Fans line up to watch Lovato, hear Cowell's quips
For the members of DV8, a female quartet from New Jersey, selecting a song to perform at "the X Factor" auditions wasn't a problem.
"Choosing the song was easy," Lyric, 19, said. Coordinating outfits, that was the hard part.
The teens -- along with Lyric, 18-year-old Queen and Loca and 19-year-old Hazel -- plan to sing "Next to Me" by Emeli Sande -- for the "X Factor" judges.
Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato, along with new judges Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio -- are at the Nassau Coliseum Wednesday through Friday to hear hopefuls attempt to land a spot on the reality singing competition.
Some 4,000 audience members, primarily teens, screamed wildly as the show started, an hour late, at 3, sans Cowell. In a thin white Tee, Cowell arrived 30 minutes late, bringing with him the first straightforward negative comments of the auditions. The recipients: a sister duo, singing Justin Bieber's "As long as you love me."
Rowland then criticized Cowell's unfashionable shirt. Let the games begin!
Some fans, including Katy Lorme of Medford, who came with her son, daughter and sister, did attend primarily to see Cowell and his trademark caustic wit. But fans of the sweet Lovato have filled the arena as well.
"Seeing Demi!" Annabelle Vilbrun and Romica Mitton, both of Elmont, said in unison of why they chose to send their afternoon in Uniondale.
That, and "seeing crazy acts," Vilbrun added.
Is there a William Hung among the contestants? We can only hope.
