Red equal signs have gone viral on Facebook and Twitter, becoming the new online emblems of support for gay marriage.
Backing from celebrities like actor George Takei (Sulu on "Star Trek"), singer Beyoncé, U.S. Sens. Al Franken, Elizabeth Warren and Mark Warner and others are adding to a popular groundswell as the U.S. Supreme Court considers California's Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage, and the national Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman for federal benefits.
Takei and others changed their avatars to the symbol.
Human Rights Campaign, a Washington lobbying group promoting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, has been spotlighting the red symbol as an alternative to the blue and yellow version used to promote human rights in general.
Takei, who changed his profile picture to the red equal sign, registered 3.7 million "Likes" on his Facebook page.
