Ricky Martin to play Che in 'Evita' revival
Ricky Martin will make his Broadway debut as Che Guevara in a revival of Tim Rice-Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Evita." The production, the first revival of the Tony-winning musical since it opened on Broadway in 1980, will star Argentine actress Elena Roger as Evita Peron - the role created on Broadway by Patti LuPone and on film by Madonna.
"I've been blessed with the opportunity to perform on many of the world's largest concert stages, but I've never lost my love for the intimacy of the theater," Martin said in a statement.
The musical dramatizes the life of Eva Peron, Argentina's glamorous and controversial first lady.
The revival of "Evita" is scheduled to open in spring 2012.
Roger won an Olivier Award four years ago in this role in London, directed by Michael Grandage ("Red"), who will stage the production here.
