'Hair' through the years: A history of controversy
October 1967: "Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical" opens at the Public Theater in New York for a six-week run.
November 1967: "Hair" moves to Cheetah, a disco in midtown. Actors have to perform the show without an intermission so that the club can open for dancing at 10 p.m.
April 1968: The show its Broadway debut at the Biltmore Theater.
June 1969: The Sydney, Australia opening is interrupted by a bomb threat.
April 1970: The Massachusetts State Supreme Court rules that scheduled Boston performances of "Hair" can only proceed if the actors omit the controversial nude scene. The cast cancels the show in protest.
June 1970: Two Apollo 13 Astronauts, James Lovell and John L. Swigert, Jr., walk out of a New York performance of "Hair," claiming the show desecrates the American Flag.
June 1970: "Hair" sparks controversy in three Indiana cities. In South Bend, the local theater refused to book the show. In Evansville, church groups protested the show, and in Indianapolis, city authorities required actors to wear body stockings to conceal their nudity.
1977: An unsuccessful revival of "Hair" opens at the Biltmore, playing only 43 performances.
May 1988: Former cast members and guest performers put on a 20th anniversary benefit concert for AIDS victims. The show's original composers wrote nine new songs for the performance.
September 2005: An updated version of "Hair" opens at the Gate Theater in London. The show is set during the Iraq war, and nude scenes evoke images of Abu Ghraib.
July 22, 2008: "Hair" opens for previews at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. It's scheduled to run until August 31.
