'The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3'

The close confines of a New York City subway car can concentrate the mind wonderfully, as proven by "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three," a tight, tense caper-flick from 1974 starring Walter Matthau as a crotchety transit cop and Robert Shaw as a coolly murderous hijacker. "Pelham" remains a minor classic for its economical script, brisk pacing and - not least - a visceral layer of Manhattan grit.
