WHO Jessie Mueller
THE DEAL Mueller, who has been regularly securing Broadway gigs since she was hand-picked to appear opposite Harry Connick Jr. in the ill-fated revival of "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever," just received her biggest role yet. She will play Carole King in "Beautiful," the upcoming musical based on King's life. Originally not expected to play Broadway until spring, it will begin previews in November at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, its producers announced.
WHAT "The Nance"
THE DEAL Although "The Nance," Douglas Carter Beane's comedy about a gay burlesque performer starring Nathan Lane, officially ended its Broadway run last week, three performances were added this week to allow it to be filmed for PBS' "Live From Lincoln Center" series. It is expected to air sometime next year.
WHAT The Queen musical
THE DEAL "We Will Rock You," which has been running in London for more than a decade, will tour the U.S. this season. Dates already are set for runs in Florida, the Midwest and Los Angeles, according to queenonline.com. As of now, no New York shows have been announced, but Showbiz411 reports the producers are eyeing a Broadway run next summer.
WHO Tommy Tune
THE DEAL Tommy Tune, who has been absent from the Broadway scene for two decades, confirmed to Playbill.com that he has been hired to revamp the London musical "Top Hat," which is based on the Depression-era Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers flick and incorporates additional Irving Berlin songs, for a Broadway run. Although the show fared quite well in London, Tune acknowledged that "there's a lot of work to be done."
