Tovah Feldshuh's on a role, plus more theater buzz
THE PLAY "Pippin"
WHO Tovah Feldshuh
THE DEAL Feldshuh, who temporarily took over as Berthe in the Broadway revival of "Pippin" while Andrea Martin took a short vacation last month, will take over the role permanently once Martin departs the show Sept. 22. Martin, who received a Tony for her performance, is set to join the television series "Working the Engels."
WHO Harvey Fierstein
THE PLAY "Casa Valentina"
THE DEAL Harvey Fierstein, whose latest Broadway credits have reflected his work as a librettist ("Kinky Boots") and a performer ("La Cage aux Folles"), will return to his playwriting roots this spring with "Casa Valentina," which will be produced on Broadway by Manhattan Theatre Club. The play explores a group of men who went up to the Catskills in the 1960s to find a safe haven where they could dress up and act like women.
WHAT "Broadway on Broadway"
THE DEAL Without any kind of explanation, the Broadway League announced last week that the annual "Broadway on Broadway" concert, in which cast members from numerous Broadway musicals perform for free in Times Square in front of a massive crowd, would not take place this year. The concert is typically held on the Sunday after Labor Day. The league announced that it will instead hold a free concert in lower Manhattan titled "Broadway on the Hudson," which will be held at lunchtime Friday, Sept. 27 at Brookfield Place Waterfront Plaza. It will feature performances from 10 shows.
WHO Andy Karl
THE PLAY "Rocky"
THE DEAL Andy Karl, who has appeared on Broadway in "The Mystery of Edwin Drood," "Legally Blonde" and "Jersey Boys," has scored the plum role of Rocky Balboa in the upcoming Broadway musical version of "Rocky," which will open at the Winter Garden Theatre in March. Adrian, Rocky's girlfriend, will be played by Margo Seibert, making her Broadway debut.
