'Vanya and Sonia' takes drama critics' award
"Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike," Christopher Durang's comic mashup of Chekhov themes and contemporary family life, has won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for best play of the 2012-13 season, Newsday's Linda Winer reports. The play, starring Sigourney Weaver and David Hyde Pierce, transferred to Broadway after a successful run at the Lincoln Center Theater. Last Monday, the show received 12 Tony nominations.
"Matilda," the London hit based on Roald Dahl's children's book about a little genius girl and her family, was named best musical. It got 12 Tony nominations.
The critics group voted not to award a best foreign play, an option when an American play gets the top prize.
The Critics Circle comprises 26 critics from newspapers, magazines, wire services and websites in the tri-state area. Awards will be presented May 13 at a private ceremony.
