Thousands brave rain for Vans Warped Tour

Cloudy skies couldn't keep about 5,000 music fans from the 19th annual Vans Warped Tour Saturday in the Nassau Coliseum parking lot.

Even with the chance of rain looming, the outdoor performances -- about 100 bands spanning more than a half-dozen musical genres on multiple stages -- still went on as scheduled.

Among the acts was Long Beach singer-songwriter Vinnie Caruana, the former front man for two influential Long Island bands, I Am the Avalanche and The Movielife. He played an acoustic set at the tour's Acoustic Basement. Other notable acts on the bill included William Beckett, the former frontman for The Academy Is . . . , power-poppers Motion City Soundtrack, and Dayton, Ohio, rockers Hawthorne Heights.

As temperatures increased, many fans headed inside the Coliseum for cool air and shelter.

"I'm enjoying some of this air-conditioning instead of baking outside," said Dell Davis, 38, of Hempstead, who was escorting his niece Payton Heron, 15, of East Elmhurst and her best friend.

Fans weren't distressed by the light rain; many took the opportunity to remove their sweaty shirts and bask in the shower.

"I was hoping it rained, it'll feel cooler," said Brittany Dorn, 20, of Oceanside.

Eventually the sun came out from behind the clouds, creating brief heat spells. However, fans continued to make their way from stage to stage across the Coliseum's parking lot.

The Monster Energy Stage drew a thick crowd. The live performance included crowd surfing, circle pits, and rolls of toilet paper being bounced across the crowd.

Fans played air guitars, with many dancing in shaded areas.

"I was definitely expecting the heat, but the music has been awesome," said Brianne Hudson, 19, of West Hempstead.

When the rain came down harder at one point in the early afternoon, it didn't deter one motivated festivalgoer.

"I'm going to stay," said Carlos Valles Diaz, 16, of Westbury, a fan of the metalcore band August Burns Red. "My phone is waterproof."
