Mariah Carey joins 'American Idol' as judge
BEVERLY HILLS — Mariah Carey has joined “American Idol” as its newest judge, Fox Entertainment chief Kevin Reilly announced at the TCAs in Beverly Hills.
It was — indeed — a rather amusing/dramatic announcement, with Reilly saying he had no news about “Idol” except . . . well, wait a minute, come to think of it, he did have something. With that, he picked up his phone, and dialed (and had trouble dialing) someone.
The person answered. “Mariah, you there?”
The Carey appointment was expected, and Reilly said the deal to hire her was made just a few hours ago. Carey didn't have much to say at the moment other than the standard “I"m excited to join," however she did say more in a news release from Fox.
“As a singer, songwriter and producer, it’s going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with 'American Idol,'” said Mariah Carey. “I’m currently in the studio working on my new album and its first single, ‘Triumphant,’ which will be out early next month. I can’t wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show which is a massive global phenomenon.”
The show's creator and executive producer Simon Fuller also commented in the release:
“We are proud to have one of the world's greatest-ever female singers join our show,” said “Idol” Fuller said. “Mariah defines the word 'Idol' and will inspire every singer that has the honor of performing in front of her.”
He was also asked about the possibility of Jennifer Lopez rejoining. (Nigel Lythgoe said earlier today she might). "I think I can say there's a hundred percent” chance she won't return, he said.
