"Mad  Men," the most reliably honored drama at any TV awards ceremony that last five-plus years, was shut out by the  Golden Globes in the best drama category, this morning. And while Jon Hamm got another nod for best actor, the question now pretty much seems pretty obvious: Have those who bestow statues fallen out of love with the esteemed series?

The ommission is remarkable, given that the new flavor of the year - "Homeland" - got a nod and so did "The Newsroom," which was violently panned by most TV critics - though not me (I think it belongs on this list.)  Not that "Men" needs any more honors, but as the show heads into the final lap (s), you are left to wonder whether it will be able to recapture the sort of magic that got it on these lists year after year. Here are the TV nominations...with some thoughts...

Best TV series - drama "Breaking Bad" "Boardwalk Empire" "Downton Abbey: Season 2" "Homeland" "The Newsroom"

My say: Good group, sure, but no "Mad Men" is mystifying. I mean, egads. And for CRYING OUT LOUD GLOBEHEADS...what's the deal with "Game of Thrones?" I mean, do you know like long complicated bloody fantasy epics with cool special effects and dragons and crazy battle scenes? A massive ommish.  And if you ask me - no one really is - I'd have "The Walking Dead" here too.

Best performance by an actress in a TV series - drama Connie Britton, "Nashville" Glenn Close, "Damages" Claire Danes, "Homeland" Michelle Dockery, "Downton Abbey: Season 2" Julianna Margulies, "The Good Wife"

My say: Britton's the surprise here, but a very nice one. She could even win!

Best performance by an actor in a TV series - drama Steve Buscemi, "Boardwalk Empire" Bryan Cranston, "Breaking Bad" Jeff Daniels, "The Newsroom" Jon Hamm, "Mad Men" Damian Lewis, "Homeland"

My say: A mirror of last year? 'cept Daniels - who dismissed TV critics as a bunch of know-nothing morons at the recent TCA in Beverly Hills. Take that!

Best TV series - comedy or musical "The Big Bang Theory" "Episodes" "Girls" "Modern Family" "Smash"

My say: "Episodes?!" Huh? No "Louie?!" Huh, again? Whatever. Good to see "Smash" in this group. About time this series gets due recognition (oh, wait - it's a new series. Nevermind...) Believe it or not, there are better comedies on TV than this little group - of course "Louie," and "Community," and "Parks and Rec" and "Portlandia."

Best performance by an actress in a TV series - comedy or musical Zooey Deschanel, "New Girl" Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "Veep" Lena Dunham, "Girls" Tina Fey, "30 Rock" Amy Poehler, "Parks and Recreation"

My say: Now I do think this list is a mirror image of last year's nom.

Best performance by an actor in a TV series - comedy or musical Alec Baldwin, "30 Rock" Don Cheadle, "House of Lies" Louis C.K., "Louie" Matt LeBlanc, "Episodes" Jim Parsons, "The Big Bang Theory"

My say: Sure, fine, good list. Will Cheadle make up for getting overlooked by the Emmys (he was nominated, didn't win.)

Best miniseries or motion picture made for TV "Game Change" "The Girl" "Hatfields & McCoys" "The Hour" "Political Animals"

My say: Great to see "The  Girl" here but "Game Change" will almost certainly win; the Globies like TV movies that poke at Sarah Palin.

Best performance by an actress in a miniseries or motion picture made for TV Nicole Kidman, "Hemingway & Gellhorn" Jessica Lange, "American Horror Story: Asylum" Sienna Miller, "The Girl" Julianne Moore, "Game Change" Sigourney Weaver, "Political Animals"

My say: Weak list; "Hemingway & Gelhorn" belongs nowhere. And Miller hams it up like everyone else on "AHS" - just a little less so.

Best performance by an actor in a miniseries or motion picture made for TV Kevin Costner, "Hatfields & McCoys" Benedict Cumberbatch, "Sherlock (Masterpiece)" Woody Harrelson, "Game Change" Toby Jones, "The Girl" Clive Owen, "Hemingway & Gellhorn"

My say: See previous "my say" re: "Hem and Gelhorn."

Best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a series, miniseries or motion picture made for TV Hayden Panettiere, "Nashville" Archie Panjabi, "The Good Wife" Sarah Paulson, "Game Change" Maggie Smith, "Downton Abbey: Season 2" Sofia Vergara, "Modern Family"

My say: Finally, the perfect list. The Globies got this one right.

Best performance by an actor in a supporting role in a series, miniseries or motion picture made for TV Max Greenfield, "New Girl" Ed Harris, "Game Change" Danny Huston, "Magic City" Mandy Patinkin, "Homeland" Eric Stonestreet, "Modern Family"

My say: All good here too, though "Magic City" remains (at least for me) a sleep aid. But Huston's good and always is. Congrats to him.
