Jessica Sanchez’ 'American Idol' fashion trifecta
In what may have been a last-ditch effort to show off her versatility both musically, and in fashion, Jessica Sanchez dramatically changed up her styles and songs for each of her three appearances on "American Idol" last night.
It was diva time at first as Sanchez took on Mariah Carey’s “My All” for which she wore a formal, deep purple strapless evening gown that featured ruffled peplums. Her second look was a modern nod to rock ‘n’ roll – a coppery jumpsuit with a corset top (this could have fit better) and a chunky, elaborate turquoise necklace. (Of the three, we liked this look best on her.)
Was it a fashion faux pas to mimic Michael Jackson-wear for her performance of “I’ll be There?” Maybe. A fitted red leather jacket (pure Michael) featured sequin patch pockets. Underneath she wore a bra with geometrics (she flashed a bare tummy), and shiny black pants. Her shoes? Sci-fi clodhoppers that would have been at home on Jackson’s monsters in the “Thriller” video. The look seemed too contrived to us.
But overall, the 16-year-old has been pretty fashion savvy. Will it help propel her into a final two spot? Hmmm.
Joshua Ledet stayed in his comfort zone donning dark formal jackets for two of his performances. The first featured graphic stitching and red buttonholes. He paired this with a gray vest, red shirt, dark pants and his signature boutonniere – this time a rose. He changed up the shirt for his second song, this one gray, and put on a shawl collared tux jacket. For his last performance, he went more casual, in a zippered, cropped black jacket with sequin pockets, black tee shirt and jeans. He whipped off the jacket mid-song (almost stripper style).
Look, for Phillip Phillips, it’s 50 shades of gray... or brown... or black. “You are who you are and we love it,” said Randy Jackson. Indeed.
And speaking of Jackson, he may well win the best accessories award of the competition. He pinned a vintage pocket watch to his peach-colored jacket last night and even tweeted about it. Maybe it was a symbol that the time has come to pick the final two. Or maybe it was just one of his crazy pins.
