Lazaro Arbos, Gurpreet Singh Sarin, Micah Johnson advance as 'American Idol' channels 'Hunger Games'
"American Idol" Hollywood round kicks off, with only 20 guys and 20 women making the cut at the end of the two weeks.
Guys are up first this week; Keith Urban says "it does feel a little bit like the 'Hunger Games' -- we'll see who gets to the weaponry first."
They come up in lines of 10, Micah Johnson in the first group -- he's the one who, after what he called a botched operation, has a speech impediment when he speaks.
Nails "Benny and the Jets" -- his voice is "amazing," in Nicki Minaj's words, when he sings. Nate Teo also moves on, baker Gabe Brown, and one of my favorites, Gurpreet Singh Sarin.
Karl Skinner gets some time in the spotlight, with his version of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." Urban praises his "killer dance moves," but judges decide his voice wasn't up to par.
Firefighter Dustin Watts and singing doctor Calvin Peters also get cut; two contestants I thought had a chance to advance with their back stories.
Cortez Shaw busts out with "I Will Always Love You," startling Randy Jackson and the other judges. He's powerful but off key. Judges are split on him; he squeaks through.
Curtis Finch and Frankie Ford get through easily with their classic, gospel-tinged voices. Next up is fan favorite Lazaro Arbos, who stutters badly when he speaks but stole everyone's heart with his fantastic singing voice. He says he doesn't have a lot of confidence, and is "scared and petrified."
Ah, but when he sings... busts out with "Angels," all the judges have big smiles on their faces. Urban says, "you simply must go on," and he does.
Trevor Blakney, Bryant Tadeo and Charles Allen are shown singing for a second. Blakney and Allen advance, but when Tadeo tells Minaj he's tired, she says, "it's good that you're tired -- because we're sending you home" to get some sleep.
He looks stunned, then she tells him she's just kidding.
Brian Rittenberry, whose wife is a cancer survivor, doesn't advance. He says afterwards, nicely, "I feel like they made a mistake."
