Black and white were the major color themes on "American Idol" Wednesday night, and we’re not just talking about the contestants. Nicki Minaj led the way with a black and white ensemble, and she underscored the combo with a platinum wig that featured a black part down the middle.
Candice Glover donned a white studded jacket over a simple black top and pant outfit, jazzing up the...Read more »
"American Idol” sent five out of 10 women to the semifinals after an almost unbelievable night of strong performances, with Juliana Chahayed, Rachel Hale and Zoanette Johnson the best of seven memorable singers in my opinion.
But the brutal level of competition meant the judges cut Chahayed, Hale and two of my other favorites — Melinda Ademi and Cristabel Clack.

Zoanette Johnson, Breanna Steer, Aubrey Cleland, Candice Glover and surprisingly Janelle Arthur in 'American Idol' semifinals
"American Idol" is about to send five out of ten women contestants on to the semifinals -- a lot of drama, since by my count seven of them deserved to move on.
Zoanette Johnson up first, she's going to make it easily -- and does. Melinda Ademi up next, she was one of my faves but ran up against too many other strong performers tonight; she gets cut.

Zoanette Johnson gets standing ovation, Breanna Steer busts windows but Janelle Arthur 'flat' on 'American Idol'
Breanna Steer is next on "American Idol" doing a sultry version of Jazmine Sullivan's "Bust your Windows." She owns the stage, looks like a professional, in total command with her voice -- and nails the big last note. Wow.
"I dated a girl like that many years ago," cracks Keith Urban, who says he "loved it." Thinks the vibe was exactly right, "and...Read more »
Aubrey Cleland next on "American Idol," doing an ethereal version of Beyonce's "Sweet Dreams." She looks fantastic and hits all of the notes and is in control — particularly nice on the last note, like a bird. Her voice is a bit thin for the song, but a good performance.
Keith Urban liked her "balance of poise and fire." Nicki Minaj starts simply, "I am obsessed...Read more »
Jett Hermano next on "American Idol," at the piano with a dramatic, slow version of Rihanna's "Only Girl." Her vocal skills are impressive; comes across like she's a professional. For whatever reason, no big emotional connection for me, even though I liked it.
"I love that you did this unique arrangement," says Keith Urban, "it brought out the sexiness of...Read more »
Candice Glover goes big, Juliana Chahayed goes small as Melinda Ademi gets nervous on 'American Idol'
Melinda Ademi kicks things off as “American Idol” sends another five women on to the semifinals; she's one of my faves, talks in the bio piece about how her family arrived a few years ago as refugees from Kosovo.
In purple-pink tights, singing Jessie J's “Nobody's Perfect.“ Lots of energy and a good voice, but a bit all over the place — feel like she's trying a bit too hard.

Charlie Askew and Elijah Liu became superstars tonight on “American Idol,“ with Devin Velez lurking close behind as all three electrified the audience with their compelling personalities as much as their vocal chops.
I'm really excited to see more from all three; they're all young and emotionally honest on stage, but so different beyond that.
Below's how I rated the 10 male contestants...Read more »
For years we’ve complained that the boys are boring and the girls over-the-top when it comes to fashion on "American Idol." Thursday night’s show turned that whole premise on its ear, and from a style standpoint, it was all rather entertaining.
Josh “JDA” Davila went full-throttle drag queen wearing a bondage-style harness top – bare in the back -- slit gaucho pants with sparkling...Read more »
Charlie Askew, Elijah Liu, Devin Velez, Curtis Finch make 'American Idol' semifinals, as surprisingly does Paul Jolley
"American Idol" judges are about to send five guys through to the semifinals, with five others going home. I think four are obvious, fifth is going to be tougher.
