Amber Holcomb rocks a vintage look on 'American Idol'
The final four girls on "American Idol" underscored the “now and then” theme of the Wednesday night show with fashion. But surprisingly the somewhat modern looks worn to perform current hits were a bit boring. Most of the contestants looked better in formal ensembles inspired by classic songs from the past.
There was a dramatic difference between Amber Holcomb’s dull first outfit – a pale blue top over ivory jeans with shredded stripes (they were the only thing Nicki Minaj liked about her “now” performance) and her second look. Holcomb was a total stunner in a 50’s style hostess ensemble – a mottled burgundy peplum top and matching skinny cigarette pants cropped slightly above the ankle worn with massively high gold shoes. Props to the stylists for this one because it not only emphasized the girl’s long, lean physique, but was a real point of difference – everyone else went for loungey torch song singer frocks. Minaj said she looked like, “a beautiful, budding red rose.”
On its own, Angie Miller’s first outfit wasn’t really dull, but the hardware over the shirt (in this case a metallic cage) and the leather (those leather shorts again which Randy Jackson liked) have become a bit of a trademark for her, and not necessarily in a good way. It was nice to see her in a long gown – this one a burgundy, backless job with (natch!) leather accents and a slit in the front. Minaj told her that she reminded her of a “Disney princess.” Probably not her favorite comparison – she’s been working so hard to shed the goody-goody suburbanite image.
We’re pretty sure Kree Harrison has worn the cobalt silky shirt and black pants – (maybe not the peep toe pumps) -- before, and it just seemed a little uninspired considering the level of this competition. She was much more glamorous second time around in a black, one-shoulder evening gown that featured a sheer panel skirt. Very classic and pretty.
As for Candice Glover, well, she seems to have settled in comfortably to her favorite look: a leather jacket with sparkly accents, over a loose shirt (this one purple with a zip front), black pants and stilettos. She accessorized with a crystal choker and giant hoops. “Baby girl, you look good, you look great,” Minaj said. Out of the four finalists she looked the least comfortable in her second ensemble – a black dress with pearl encrusted accents topped by a lace jacket – it may have been the first dress she’s worn on the show.
Biggest fashion nod of the night? Jackson’s neon orange jacket. Randy rocked it.
