'American Idol' fashion: Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey are twins, kind of
The two American Idol divas, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, have verrrrry different styles, so it was odd to see them both wearing short dresses in the exact same shade of orangey-red on Wednesday night’s show.
Minaj donned a molded-to-her-body, short- sleeved sheath accessorized with a diamond tennis necklace. Carey went for a 50s style frock — a sleeveless shirtwaist with plunging neckline (and we mean plunging), nipped waist and flared skirt. She accessorized — inexplicably — with a magic wand.
Though the shades were so exact, you would have thought it was planned, Ryan Seacrest called it a “fashion coincidence.”
It was jacket night for the guys. Lazaro Arbos, who traditionally favors colors like hot pink and marigold, toned it down with a black leather moto jacket and brownish pants, though he couldn't resist a little glam, and matched his gold skinny tie to his gold shoes.
Devin Velez looked very Motown in his red tuxedo jacket that was trimmed with black leather worn with a black shirt with a white color. It was costumey but cool.
Burnell Taylor got props for his all white suit, which he accessorized, with a sparkly brooch rather than a tie. Minaj said he was, “Looking like a sexy doctor in all white,” and Carey said, “I do love the ensemble,” and called it “debonair.”
The girls mixed it up a bit. Candice Glover wore a loose, silvery top that was studded at the shoulder with leggings and slouchy high heeled boots. Kree Harrison donned a glittery cropped jacket over an all black ensemble and wore shimmering, platform, sky stilettos that looked like they were challenging to walk in.
Janelle Arthur was trying for some kind of country look in a white puffy shirt worn over — huh? -- tribal printed leggings with cowboy boots.
One of the judges’ favorite lines to a good vocalist is, “you could sing the phone book.” Well Amber Holcomb could wear it. She looks great in everything. Last night it was a fitted tight white short dress with a slash pattern. She sounded good too.
Worst of the night to Angie Miller who stepped out of her comfort zone from a vocal and fashion standpoint. It’s not that her tiny, tight cobalt dress with black insets and cutouts worn with high, high booties looked bad — it looked wrong (and according to the judges, she sounded wrong too). Minaj scolded her for being overtly sexy and Carey called the look risqué. Maybe she should have “shopped around.”
