Lee Dewyze is up first on "American Idol," singing "The Letter." Miley Cyrus tells him to push a little more, give us something we wouldn't expect.

It's kind of an odd pick. He messes with the cadence, turns it into almost a syncopated rhythm. Hmm, a lot of passion, and the chorus is pretty compelling actually, with a bit of soul. Big hand from the crowd; it was pretty good, actually -- but a weird pick . . .  so old.

Randy thought it was an odd pick, but says he "knocked it out of the box." Ellen says he's like her favorite pen, worried it was running out of ink, but it's back. Kara thought best ever by him, big confidence, great performance.

Simon says out of hundreds of possible songs,it was a totally weird pick, corny, not a "recording performance."

Comment from Tom Duncan: Think he is cool in that he appears to know his voice and what he enjoys. I think he is polite and unpretentious which is nice.

Also, where did he get that cool silver guitar pick necklace he wore last night?
