Days before ABC was to present its 2010 fall lineup, its highly regarded chief of entertainment resigned.

The timing was peculiar. The reasons were nonexistent (or not given). The silence from ABC was deafening.

Now this: The Hollywood Reporter said last night Steve McPherson is the target of a sexual harrassment probe at the network.

His lawyer released this statement to the magazine:

"Upon Steve McPherson returning to work from his vacation on Monday, he made a voluntary decision to resign and ABC accepted his resignation. It is not uncommon for high level executives to be the subject of gossip and innuendo. That would include rumors of internal situations which can easily be misinterpreted or misrepresented. Seems like it goes with the territory, and there is nothing further to discuss."

In fact, it does not "go with the territory." Most executives of this stature are shown the door because of failed development or bad ratings or overspending.

ABC's session at the TCA is later this week. One assumes the question will be asked.
