Newsday nominated for 9 New York Emmy Awards

Newsday received nine nominations for New York Emmy Awards for videos posted to Newsday.com.

The nominations were announced Wednesday morning at the studios of CUNY-TV. Winners are to be announced April 14 in Manhattan by the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Science.

The nine nominated videos, created by a team of visual journalists, editors, producers and software developers, were posted on Newsday.com from September 2011 to August 2012, and range in subject from silent movies and street painting to the Republican National Convention.

"I am very proud of our entire multimedia team," said Debby Krenek, editorial director and senior vice president of digital media. "These nominations are a tribute to their ability to bring compelling stories to our viewers in a very visual way."

Also honored were MSG Varsity, with 29 nominations, and News 12 Long Island, with 20. Both are owned by Cablevision, which also owns Newsday.

For all its locations, which include Westchester, Connecticut and New Jersey, News 12 received 82 Emmy nominations.

Newsday.com, which took home two Emmy Awards in 2012, is nominated this year for the following:

"One girl's fight for survival," which chronicled the story of Bayport's Marisa Carney, 5, and her debilitating illness. The video was posted Sept. 14, 2011, and is nominated in the continuing coverage category.

"A fighting chance," about a Westbury boxing gym that has produced fighters who have gone on to lead productive lives outside the ring. The video was posted Aug. 31, 2012, and is nominated in the interactivity category.

"Long Island Sound and Art Festival," about artists in Centerport who paint to the inspiration of live music and audience interaction. The video was posted June 24, 2012, and, like the next two entries, is nominated in the arts/news category.

"Puppet theater," featuring Roman Valdes, who talks about how special it is for him to bring joy to children. The video was posted Jan. 27, 2012.

"Street painting in riverhead," about artists who use chalk to draw on the downtown streets. The video was posted May 27, 2012.

"Silent Movies Are Back," which features a Huntington theater that offers an assortment of silent films. The piece was posted Dec. 6, 2011, and is nominated in the entertainment/news category.

"Young motocross racers forge bond," which chronicles a motocross racer as he copes with the challenges of becoming a professional while developing bonds with the kids he mentors. The video was posted Feb. 1, 2012, and is nominated in the human interest/program category.

"Indoctrination Day at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy," on the class of 2016's first day. The video was posted July 5, 2012, and is nominated in the military/news category.

"Republicans reflect on the 2012 GOP," about enthusiastic American sharing their views on being Republican as they gathered at the Tampa, Fla., GOP convention. Posted Aug. 30, 2012, the piece is nominated in the politics/government category.
