Fall fashion: The season's hottest trends
Fall won't just be about layering up -- but dressing up, if designers get their way. This autumn's wardrobe goes long on luxe, whether we're talking fabric (velvets, brocade), silhouette (full, fluid) or color (let's just say swimming phenom Missy Franklin and those Olympic gymnasts won't be the only gals wearing gold this year).
Diane von Furstenberg, Jill Stuart and other designers worked with the bold interplay of black and white, from color-blocks and florals to clever abstract prints like this sleeveless dress; $138 at select Ann Taylor stores and anntaylor.com.
You'll be seeing red, or at least reddish, come fall, with shades of burgundy, oxblood, plum and wine popping up everywhere, like on this faux leather baseball jacket; $19.95 at H&M stores.
Menswear prints still look feminine on this wool and angora Lilliana jacket with dramatic shawl collar, $2,738, and wool Caitlyn Pants, $1,198, both from Ralph Lauren at select Saks Fifth Avenue stores and saks.com.
You don't have to be an Olympian to enjoy gold, which gets a flashy comeback this fall, like on this glitzy, bejeweled top, $99; at select H&M stores.
Leather (real or faux) amps up a look, and needn't break the bank. Bernardo's leather moto jacket with gray hood, $98; at Lord & Taylor stores and lordandtaylor.com.
Shades of burgundy, Bordeaux and oxblood pop up everywhere from head to--these pony hair ankle boots, called "Right" boots; $650 at Stuart Weitzman, Manhattan; and stuartweitzman.com.
It's not just staid winter white, but shades of snow, ivory and bone that create a soft palette for eveningwear, sheer tops and cozy knits, like this RACHEL Rachel Roy cardigan, $139, top, $99, and sheer chiffon skirt, $109; at select Macy's stores and macys.com.
It's not just leather jackets or skirts. This season's leather comes in bold color choices, pops up as unexpected trim on dresses or coats (just the sleeves in leather, for instance), or is embellished in unusual fabrications. Here, Proenza Schouler's leather woven skirt, $3,550, and asymmetric jacket, $5,685; at Saks Fifth Avenue, Manhattan.
Jaclyn Smiths belted tunic, $24.99, incorporates a shade of crimson in its oversize plaid; at Kmart, Huntington; and Kmart.com
Don't forget attention-grabbing outerwear; here, a chartreuse jacket, $625 (atop a silk/spandex blouse, $275, and black petal skirt, $450), all by Milly; at select Bloomingdale's stores and bloomingdales.com.
Natures go-to shade is another strong color for fall, especially in deep rich shades like forest and bottle green. This color-blocked green handbag; $59.95 at H&M stores.
Think long, languid hemlines, shirtdresses, ponchos, and more from that eclectic era thats equal parts Joni Mitchell, Farrah Fawcett and Billie Jean King. Here, Bar IIIs vest, $69, peasanty top, $39, and asymmetrical skirt, $59; at select Macys stores.
The easiest (and most economical) way to incorporate this seasons popular jewel tones into your wardrobe is by picking up a few on-trend accessories, like this snake skin embossed cuff, $9.97, with snakey texture and suede lining; at charmingcharlie.com.
One way to trim costs is to opt for a leather-trimmed top, or coat, rather than go for an all-over leather dress, trousers or jacket. Or theres always Pleather, popping up here in this dress, $29.99, from Sofia by Sofia Vergara; at Kmart, Huntington, Manhattan; and kmart.com.
Menswear gets a sleek take in this plaid jacket from MICHAEL Michael Kors, $175; at piperlime.com.
The menswear influence can be felt down to your soles, in lace-up oxfords or tasseled brogues like Brns Boylenn, $115; at bornshoes.com.
